Mangrove for Production and Protection

Field Document No.43, 1993

Table of Contents

This case study starts with an overview of the mangrove forests of Vietnam together with data about distribution and flora and fauna found in them. The factors affecting mangroves such as deforestation are addressed and the role of mangrove forests in the production of various economic resources is explained. This case study took place in the Can Gio District, and this district is described in terms of land-use and social indicators.

The management and production of the Can Gio mangrove area is subdivided into forestry- and non-forestry related production. Forest production takes place in plantations and one of the major forestry products is charcoal. Non-forestry production is based on aquaculture and one of these, shrimp farming, is explained in more detail. A separate chapter briefly describes the use of improved cookstoves in this district. The establishment of environmental protection forest is addressed and explanations on the laws and regulations are given. The last chapter focuses on the policy and development implications of a number of issues related to mangrove forests.
